Egypt Warns Against New Ethiopian Dams on the Nile

CAIRO, Egypt — Egypt has reiterated its opposition to the construction of additional dams on the Nile in Ethiopia, with Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam stating that Egypt "will not allow" new upstream projects that could affect its water security. He called for a legally binding agreement governing the operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), including provisions for data sharing and reservoir releases during drought periods.

Ethiopia has consistently maintained that the GERD is a sovereign development project intended for hydropower generation and has emphasized its commitment to the principle of equitable and reasonable utilization of the Nile. Negotiations among Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan have yet to produce a comprehensive agreement despite years of African Union-led and international mediation.

The renewed exchange highlights the continuing challenges of balancing national development, water security, and cooperative management within the Nile Basin.
